altopalo are an excellent band from Brooklyn, NY, and also great friends of mine. For their 2022 album “frenemy”, a concept album about the dynamics of the band, the challenges of friendship and creative partnership, they asked me to collaborate with Jackson Bernard, who had created their previous album covers. I believe our collaboration was fruitful here - our shared love of medieval decorative motifs resulted in these densely illustrated borders that framed a central sculpture/collage that Jackson would build and photograph. For the cover, I sketched out a hydra/chimera representing the band, which Jackson sculpted and photographed and made his own.
